Theme 1. Domestic Buildings |
New housing typically adds only 0.7-1% to the UK stock every year, meaning that it could take many years for initiatives aimed at promoting the use of renewables in new buildings to have a significant overall impact. With such huge potential in existing buildings therefore, INREB’s Domestic Buildings theme is working to overcome the barriers to the wider scale use of low carbon technologies in refurbishment schemes. |
 |
Theme 2. Non-Domestic Buildings |
Non-domestic buildings are responsible for a significant proportion of the UK’s total energy use and 18.5% of the annual carbon dioxide emissions. Alongside this fact, the ‘EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive’, due to become law by the end of 2005, will require that energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technologies are seriously considered in all new build and refurbishment projects. INREB’s Non-Domestic Buildings theme therefore aims to reduce carbon emissions associated with a range of building types in this sector. |
 |
Theme 3. Low Carbon Communities |
The ‘Sustainable Communities: Building for the Future’ document, published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in March 2003 sets out the UK action plan for achieving the step changes required to create sustainable communities in the UK. INREB’s Low Carbon Communities theme addresses this agenda and aims to assist the UK in delivering mixed-use low carbon development. |
